As a footwear designer I am familiar with shoe made of plastic. From flip-flops to rain boots, from high end fashion ones to supermarket cheaply made. However, I have never had first hand experiences design and developing these plastic shoes.
The absolute eye opening for me is how the uppers are produced. The upper injection moulds are extremely intricate and complicated than any midsole tooling mould that I have ever worked on.
The essentials: The Foundation
Once the injection of each shoe parts are completed, a simple 2 layers of cement applied to assemble these shoes.
Next step: The Ones Of Color Blocking
Since this shoe is mainly used for golfers, to further capture the aesthetic of an Oxford silhouette, color blocking is essential.
Deep Cuts: The Ones With Graphic Applications
Each graphic is a sheet of graphic film which is applied onto designed areas. These graphics are being applied onto shoes either using water transfer or vacuum thermal machine.
