PONY (GREAT CHINA) GRAPHIC Ts

HOW TO DEVELOP A SERIES OF GRAPHICS FOR AN URBAN BRAND?

 

It all starts with a little concept sketches.

PONY (Product of New York ) is a brand that has a long urban city history since it was born in New York City on Madison Avenue in 1972. During the time I was working for PONY (in China), the brand has been mainly focused on Asia markets. Most products were driving away from the urban brand history background. I, on the other hand, since lived in New York City since late 90’s have a deep love for its urban culture roots. I wanted to bring urban background and aesthetics back into products.

In order to make sense of both PONY urban brand history and current company Asian market focus I decided on a small SMU collection of 6 graphics of cities and countries where PONY brand is popular. They are Argentina, HongKong, Philippines, Seoul, Shanghai and Taipei. The general idea was to use iconic objects and characters from each city in a very straight forward black and white fashion. I wanted to showcase the personalities of each city.
