During the six year period between 2001 and 2007, I was working for Rockport at Reebok headquarter (before Adidas acquired Reebok) and Fryeboots out of Greatneck, New York. My main design focus was in leather footwear, which is very different comparing to sneaker design.
Besides the technical aspect of difference, which is the handmade vs machine made. Every pair of Fryeboots is handmade by experienced cobbler. Every stitching is hand sewed. every leather is hand crafted. Footwear is an art form in that regard.
Rockport footwear are being considered as “brown shoes”, which is maintaining leather handmade footwear aesthetics, but produced in a machine driven environment. The biggest difference is the outsole construction, which is produced in a sneaker fashion to increase comfort.
